What is Search Engine Optimization
Having your website found amongst the millions of others on the internet is an important factor to involve in the creation of any website.
Search engine optimization is an Internet marketing strategy to increase the flow of traffic into your website and to increase the rank of your website within the natural search results of a search engine.
Why is SEO important to my website?
In theory, and often proven by statistics, the higher a websites page rank in the results list, the more traffic it will receive. The internet is the fastest growing medium of advertising and sales and due to SEO, people are finding what they want straight away. A high page ranking gives your business access to the global market, which is what makes SEO such an important factor for each and every website.
How does SEO work?
SEO increases your websites traffic but is not a form of advertising. The idea behind SEO is that your site is ranked highly within the search results due to the relevance to the search terms. Search engines are text-driven programs that make use of algorithms and “crawlers” to search the internet, gathering keywords and phrases from websites which are then indexed into a large database.
The first step is to send the Crawler (also known as Spider or Googlebot) out into the internet, which follow links from one page to another and indexes every keyword on the way. Once a website has had the keywords found within its pages indexed, all of this data is thrown into a giant database for later retrieval. The database assigns the webpage to certain keywords sometimes not getting the correct meaning of the website assigned. This is where SEO comes in, making sure your website is indexed against the correct keywords, and thus receiving higher rankings.
When a search request is compiled from the search engine, the database is searched for the keywords entered, and all relevant pages are displayed. Since more than one page will generally be displayed, the database determines which website is more suitable for the search by calculating its relevancy of each the pages in its index to the search string. Different search engines can give different results, as several algorithms can be used by a single search engine, which is why it pays off to have dedicated efforts towards SEO to make sure your website stays at the top. The different algorithms search for different parts of the website including keyword density, links or metatags. Applying time to maximize your keyword density, links and metatags will help ensure your website stays at the top of every search engine.
